The operations of the Software and Hardware Installation, Repair, and Maintenance (SHIRM) Unit, is a crucial component of COMSIT Directorate. The unit’s core responsibilities include:
- Installation and Deployment: Providing timely and efficient installation and deployment of all software and hardware systems across the university, ensuring compliance with university standards and security protocols.
- Repair and Maintenance: Performing comprehensive repairs and maintenance of all university hardware and software assets. This includes proactive monitoring, scheduled maintenance procedures, and rapid response to reported faults, minimizing downtime and maximizing the lifespan of equipment.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Providing first-line and escalated technical support to university users experiencing hardware or software issues. This encompasses detailed diagnostics, problem resolution, and user training to promote self-sufficiency.
- System Certification and Security: Ensuring all systems meet established security standards and undergo regular audits for compliance. The unit is responsible for implementing and maintaining robust security protocols to protect sensitive data and prevent system breaches.
- ICT Asset Management: Implementing and managing a comprehensive ICT asset tracking system in collaboration with the Bursary Stores Unit to monitor equipment lifecycle, inventory levels, and maintenance schedules, optimizing resource allocation and minimizing waste.
- Training and Skill Development: Providing training and skills development programs for university staff and students, enhancing their understanding of technology and promoting best practices in equipment usage and maintenance. This includes formal training sessions, workshops, and readily accessible documentation.
- Revenue Generation: Developing and implementing strategies to generate revenue through service contracts with internal departments and external clients, while ensuring cost-effectiveness and service quality. This contributes to the unit’s self-sustainability and reduces its reliance on university funding.
